On September 4, we welcomed Sarunyapat Phoompuang from Imperial College London for a seminar in PHYS1123 on the influence of spectral resolution on net Doppler shift retrieval in exoplanet atmospheres.

Exoplanet atmospheres carry faint spectral signatures of their composition and dynamics. Sarunyapat discussed how spectral resolution affects the recovery of Doppler shifts caused by atmospheric winds and orbital motion. The seminar also considered how magnetic fields can change the wind velocities recovered at different orbital phases, and how realistic observational effects can be added to future simulations.

It was a lively afternoon with students and colleagues from the department, followed by a group photo with our speaker.
